The case raises a broader question that many football clubs and corporations alike struggle to answer: How should organisations deal with employees who publicly express political opinions and cross an (imaginary) line?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, I had the pleasure of joining the <em>Hamburger Abendblatt<\/em>\u2019s <strong>#MillernTalk<\/strong> podcast, hosted by two sports reporters, <strong>Rupert Fabig<\/strong> and <strong>Maximilian Bronner<\/strong>, to discuss a topic that sits at the intersection of sports, communication, and reputation management:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>How do you handle players (or employees) who express controversial \u2013 though not extremist \u2013 political views on social media?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The conversation was sparked by a recent case involving <strong>Jackson Irvine<\/strong>, a key player of the German football club <strong>FC St. Pauli<\/strong>, a team known for its politically active and socially conscious fan base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in June, Irvine had posted a selfie wearing the jersey of a fictional \u201cFC Palestine\u201d \u2013 featuring a logo that displayed the borders of the State of Palestine, including the territory of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What followed was a communications firestorm. Fan groups, club members, sponsors, media outlets, and even Irvine\u2019s wife entered the debate. An apology got lukewarm, causing more noise. A member of the Board of FC St. Pauli posted an inappropriate comment on Irvine&#8217;s Instagram account. The story smoulders for weeks and month and goes beyond a single social post \u2013 becoming what crisis professionals call a <strong>\u201csticky crisis\u201d<\/strong>: one that is emotionally charged, polarising, and just doesn&#8217;t go away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Two key takeaways from the podcast:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1\ufe0f\u20e3 Hope is not a strategy.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Most football clubs \u2013 and, frankly, most companies \u2013 are not prepared for such cases. They sit and wait, relying on the assumption that \u201cit won\u2019t happen to us\u201d until it does.<br>But in today\u2019s environment, where personal expression and corporate identity often collide, every organisation needs a clear <strong>playbook<\/strong> for how to respond when an employee\u2019s personal post becomes a public issue and crosses a red line.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2\ufe0f\u20e3 Silence shrinks your room for manoeuvre.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In crises like these, timing is critical. The longer an organisation waits to address a smouldering controversy, the fewer viable options remain.<br>What could have been handled calmly early on may later demand a defensive, reactive stance \u2013 which rarely satisfies anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What next for FC St. Pauli?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, this specific controversy will fade.
